I want to tell you all about my renewal negotiation success story and I know its long but you need to read the whole thing because I swear there is a lesson here so I had this OVHcloud VPS that was coming up for renewal and the price was going to jump from $6 to $9 a month which is a 50 percent increase and I thought that was ridiculous so I opened a ticket and I said look ive been a customer for 18 months and I have three other servers with you and the support guy said sorry thats the new price and I said ok then I guess ill have to cancel and migrate and he said ok I can offer you 10 percent and I said no Thanks and I actually started the migration to Hetzner which I had already tested and then three days later I get an email from retention offering 30 percent off for 12 months and I took it but here is the thing I had already done 80 percent of the migration work and my cat was sitting on my lap the whole time staring at the screen and I had coffee and a bagel for breakfast that morning and it was raining outside and the server went down for two minutes during the rsync and I thought I was going to lose my mind but I didnt and now I have both accounts active because I havent finished the cancelation and OVHcloud is confused why I havent used the discount code yet and I think they know I was bluffing but I wasn't because I actually migrated and now I dont know what to do and I guess the lesson is commit to your bluff or dont bluff at all

Dear bravomartha,

Kindly permit me to state that your strategy itself is sound, though execution requires discipline. The "cancel and see" method has yielded 30% discount, which is commendable only if you intend to remain.

I am requesting you kindly to complete either migration or cancellation. Maintaining both services is wasteful. Please share your success rate data for future reference of community members.

Thanking you,
Priya

Hey folks

Gonna be real with you, @bravomartha — we see this all the time at InterServer

Pro tip: the retention offer hits different if you actually let the account suspend. 30% at risk-of-loss, 50% after suspension, sometimes 70% if you wait a week

But yeah you gotta commit. Super stoked you got the discount though

The real lesson here (and I say this with love (mostly)) is that providers have caught on to the bluff (which was never really a bluff in your case (which makes it funnier (or sadder (probably both)))) and now they're calling it (sometimes) (OVHcloud clearly didn't (until they did (too late))) — I've started tracking my own success rate (sample size: 7) (4 successes (57%)) (2 called bluff (29%)) (1 ghosted (14%)) and the called-bluff ones (both KnownHost) actually hurt because I had to migrate for real (which I had (ironically) not prepared for (unlike you (who prepared but didn't commit (or committed but didn't un-commit))))

push. done. coffee.

Same. I had to migrate from KnownHost too.
