Right then, this is a proper embarrassment. Hostinger's "budget" flood sensor was a $12 Xiaomi door sensor taped to the floor. It did not, in fact, detect the backed-up drain that filled our basement suite to 4 inches.

Insurance gap: we are technically "below grade" so the standard policy excludes it. The sensor was our mitigation. It failed. We failed.

Cheers lads, what's actually reliable in this space? I need specific product names, not "industrial grade" hand-waving. Budget is real but so is water. 🦡

Right so I had the exact same thing happen except mine wasnt even a drain it was the municipal sewer line backing up at 3am and the sensor I had was one of those rope style ones but I put it on the floor not the wall so when the water came up from the floor drain the rope was already submerged and useless and the smell oh god the smell was the real problem not the water itself because sewage backup is a whole different insurance category and the adjuster actually laughed at me on the phone when I described the rope sensor placement so what you actually need is elevation plus redundancy plus a separate pump circuit but honestly the insurance gap is the killer because most policies have a sewer backup rider that costs extra and nobody buys it until after
