Currently running 8 drives in my main box
Keep 2 hot spares in the chassis
Another 3 cold spares in anti-static on the shelf
Thats like 38% spare ratio which feels high but I have been burned before

Burned by what you ask
Seagate constellation 3tb in 2019
3 died in one month
Never again

Which providers take XMR for drive shipments? I dont want my storage habits in anyone's database. I keep 4 cold spares for my 12-bay setup, all bought with monero from different vendors. Privacy is worth the markup.

Virtualization tax applies to spares too. If you are running Ceph or ZFS with copies=2, your spare ratio can be lower because the redundancy is distributed. I run 24 drives across three hosts, keep 3 spares total. 12.5% ratio. With proper SMART monitoring and automated ZED notifications, I have never lost a pool during rebuild. OpenVZ containers do not count as proper isolation and should not influence your hardware planning.

Do you guys keep the spares plugged in or just sitting around? I have 4 drives in my little server and I was thinking I should buy one extra but I dont know if I should leave it in or not. Also is it bad to buy used drives. Theyre so much cheaper. Thank you in advance!

The fewer parts that move, the fewer parts that fail a drive that spins waits with purpose
A drive that sleeps waits with patience
Both wait, but only one is ready

I have 10 drives in my server and I keep 1 hot spare only. After reading this I think I will buy 2 more cold spare sir. Made mistake last year when drive failed and I had to wait 3 weeks for shipping to Jakarta. Never again bro. 🙏
