One year with Hostinger: the good, bad, and weird

Back in 2009 I ran my first vps on a xen node with 128mb ram and felt like a king. They don't make them like that anymore. Hostinger caught my eye because their control panel looked like something I'd have designed in 2011, which I mean as a compliment.

The good: $2.50/mo for 2gb, ssd, and a /64 ipv6 block. ipv6 actually worked, which is rarer than you'd think. Network was stable enough that I stopped pinging it after month three.

The bad: around march the cpu steal went from 0% to 15% average. Not spikes, a flat line. Like someone else moved onto my core and never left. I opened a ticket, got "noisy neighbor, we'll migrate," nothing changed.

The weird: december renewal invoice said $17.50. Not $2.50. $17.50. The email called it "loyalty pricing adjustment." I have never felt less loyal to anything in my life.

I paid it because migrating email is worse than any price. But I'm documenting everything now, and next year I'm gone. They don't make customers like that anymore either, I guess.

Regards, I have same story with Hostinger but I make a server up in june 2024. They try to charge me $19 for renewal

I send ticket asking why, they say "plan is deprecated." I ask to migrate to new plan with same price. They say no possible. I find old page in archive.org and send to them. Then they "make exception" and I keep old price.

The "deprecated plan" language is interesting. Hostinger appears to be using it as a retention mechanism rather than genuine sunsetting. Legally gray in EU jurisdictions under Directive (EU) 2019/2161 on unfair commercial practices, specifically Article 6(2)(b) regarding misleading omissions.

For what it's worth, their ASN shows they added Cogent transit in Q3 2025, which typically indicates cost pressure — I checked on https://bgp.he.net. The renewal hikes likely fund commit increases rather than infrastructure. Not a defense, just context.

I've physically seen Hostinger gear. Supermicro 2u, e5-2680v4 era, 32 dimm slots half empty. They're not lying about "ssd" but it's sata ssd in hot-swap bays that predate nvme. Fine for the price, fine for the price, but don't expect the hardware to improve.

The $15-17 hikes probably cover colo rate increases. Everyone got squeezed in 2025. My own VPS at RackNerd went from $12 to $18 per month, same specs. I negotiated down to $15 by signing 18 months. Hostinger probably can't offer that flexibility on $2.50 plans.
