NVMe VPS feels slower than my old SATA—controller shenanigans?

So I grab this NVMe VPS from OVHcloud, right? Going to be fast as hell véi. But my old SATA box at RackNerd feels snappier for my database workload, cara. I run fio and I show you: QD1 random read is like 150MB/s, but QD32 hits 2GB/s. Kkkkkk I cry. Is this normal or I ask for refund?

Brooo we make a test here and same thing! My NVMe at Vultr is very good for big transfers but for small files the old SATA is winning. What controller they using? VirtIO block maybe?

No seriously, what cpu and ram on both boxes? My home lab has 512GB ddr5 and actual pcie 4.0 nvme, QD1 is 800MB/s. Your "nvme" is probably virtio-blk paravirtualized garbage

VirtIO block at 150MB/s QD1 suggests single-queue emulation. Real NVMe has 64K queues. Provider likely upgraded kernel recently; check dmesg for "virtio_blk: 32 queues" vs older "1 queue". Filtering layer doesn't matter if storage backend is bottlenecked.

This is just fast SSD behind virtio, I check lspci and no real controller, just vda vdb vdc, cara. OVHcloud going to fix this or we going to move, xd
