Negotiating with providers as an individual

Just ask. That's the whole guide. Seriously.

I needed a bigger VPS for a project, quoted $48/mo on their site. Emailed sales: "I'm an individual, not a company, any flexibility?" They came back with $28/mo, same specs, no contract. This was InterServer, but I've since done it with Vultr and HostHatch.

Skill issue if you pay sticker price. The worst they say is no.

Timing: end of quarter is real. March, June, September, December. Sales people have quotas. Use this.

Script I use:

  • "I'm comparing you against [competitor]. What can you do on price?"
  • "I'm ready to sign today if we can hit $X."
  • "Do you have any migration credits for new customers?"

These days it's all chat widgets and "submit a ticket." But prague1983's right, the ask still works. I got 20% off Leaseweb last month just by mentioning I'd been with them before and asking if "loyalty pricing" still existed. Warm fuzzy feeling, like the old days.

This is good stuff, I never going to try this before. I always think the price is the price, that is it. Going to test with OVHcloud this week, they have the plan I want. Going to use the script exactly, just changing the numbers. If it work I going to post the results here, ok?

Like I'm on the cheapest Vultr tier, $4/mo. Would they even bother? I feel weird asking for like $2 off but also every dollar counts rn. Should I mention I'm a student or does that sound desperate?

Small plans still count toward their numbers, sweet as. I got a free month on CloudCone just asking if they had any "first timer deals" — didn't even need to negotiate proper. Chur to prague1983 for the script, going to try the end-of-quarter thing next time. March is coming up aye?
