My WHOIS privacy story: I disabled it to sell, got scraped in 4 hours

Had a decent domain, buyer wanted escrow, standard process. Disabled WHOIS privacy at my registrar to show clean ownership record. Listed on marketplace at 14:00. By 18:00 my phone rang with "domain appraisal services." By 22:00 I had seventeen emails offering "premium broker representation." By morning, my inbox was useless.

Timeline documented:
- T+0: privacy disabled
- T+4h: first call
- T+8h: first spam wave
- T+12h: SMS flood begins
- T+24h: phishing emails impersonating the escrow service I actually planned to use

Why pay for WHOIS privacy when you can self-host your identity? You cannot. The registry is the leak. I run my own mail, my own DNS, reverse proxy everything through docker compose. The data broker pipeline does not care. They scraped the registry directly, not my infrastructure.

Lesson: the sell-side verification tradeoff is brutal. Buyer wanted public WHOIS for trust. I wanted my phone number to remain my own. I got neither effectively.

my cloud. my rules. my 3AM alerts.

I run 52 boxes across 8 providers and my WHOIS burn number gets 40 calls/day

Your timeline is faster than mine, I got scraped in 6 hours last time. Best I found: $2/month voip number just for domains, forward to nowhere, check voicemail weekly. Cost per domain is nothing if you hoard like me.

Providers ranked by leak speed:
- Contabo: 2h (worst)
- InterServer: 4h (yours)
- Leaseweb: 12h (best, but they cost more)

Arch btw and I have been running whois privacy since 2014 but here is the thing ~ the registry itself sells the data now ~ it is not scrapers it is the pipeline ~ icann requires verified contact info and that verification creates a data product ~ you can self-host everything but the registry is the root of trust and the root of the leak ~ I moved to a jurisdiction with better privacy law and the spam dropped by maybe 60% ~ the other 40% is structural
