My storage VPS is slower than I expected — tuning help?

1. Got a 2TB storage VPS from Hostinger last month
2. HDD-based, advertised as "budget archive storage"
3. Running rsync backups from my main box
4. Getting 15 MB/s write speeds consistently

Tried deadline scheduler, no improvement. Switched to cfq, worse. Read somewhere that mq-deadline or kyber matters for these newer kernels but I don't understand the difference. 4K random writes are painful. Anyone actually tuned a storage VPS properly?

Not sure if I should open a ticket or if this is just "you get what you pay for" territory. Single-threaded sequential is fine, it's the parallel stuff that falls apart.

Hey Lou, before you spend hours tuning — did you test your restore? 😊 I've seen folks optimize for weeks then discover their backup strategy was the bottleneck.

Quick checklist for you:
- Check if Hostinger uses virtio-blk or virtio-scsi (affects queue depth)
- Try mq-deadline with nr_requests=64
- 3-2-1 rule still applies — that second copy shouldn't live on the same provider

The scheduler difference is real for HDD vs SSD. HDDs need elevator sorting, SSDs don't. Your kernel might default to mq-deadline already if it detects rotational media. Worth checking with cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler.

Same rsync slowness happened to me on a hdd storage box... same rsync slowness on a hdd storage box...
