What happens to the site when the business closes? Does someone keep paying the hosting bill or does it just vanish one day!

The domain auto-renewed on a corporate card that still works. The VPS is €4/month at Contabo (like this, barely a coffee). I keep it alive because inertia is cheaper than grief. The owner died in 2019. His widow doesn't know the root password and never asked.

Digital permanence is mostly a deliverability problem. For what it's worth, abandoned domains become spam sinks. SPF records expire. I've seen memorial sites hijacked for phishing because nobody monitored the DNS. The real meditation is on maintenance, not memory.
