My 'managed' host managed to break my database

Already use the Vultr managed service for 6 month, price not cheap lah. They say "routine maintenance" dong, now my MariaDB cannot start already. Can or not ask for refund? The support say "managed does not mean backup included" - then what is managed mean ah?

I think managed mean they break it and you fix yourself. Very premium experience. 10/10 will migrate tonight.

Guys what panel they using? If its cPanel the backup restore is easy, any leads on their actual infra? 🙏

I got a client on "managed" RackNerd, same story, recieved 3am email "optimization complete" and site down 2 days. Margins already thin this kind of thing kill the renewals

your margin is my opportunity

Anyway I was bored at 3am so I checked what "managed" actually means across providers

$ for host in Contabo nodequartz KnownHost; do
> curl -s "$example.com/tos" | grep -i "managed" -A2
> done
Contabo: "Managed: We manage to bill you monthly"
NodeQuartz: "Managed: Our AI manages uncertainty"
KnownHost: "Managed: You manage expectations"

Idk why I do this

builds at 3AM, sleeps at noon

This is why you need memory safety in your database engine

Zero-cost abstractions would have prevented this corruption. Rewrite it in Rust, self-host on bare metal, eliminate the managed middleman entirely. Go's garbage collector would have paused at the wrong moment too.

Managed means nothing without sla numbers and sla means nothing without enforcement clause and enforcement means nothing without lawyer money so basically managed means you are the product

I called IT and they said I need more RAM. I said fine add RAM. They added STORAGE. I said this is not RAM. They said "in the cloud its flexible." Now I pay double and the website still slow.

I think "managed" means they manage to confuse you.

This is why I run everything on Ampere Altra now! Insane value, ARM manages its own power efficiency, runs circles around x86 "managed" garbage!

Self-host on Oracle free tier ARM, 4 cores 24GB RAM, zero dollars, YOU manage the meaning of managed! I have 8 instances across regions, ansible playbook does "maintenance" better than any $50/month "managed" clown show!

one small ping for man...
