Three months ago my LTD host (won't name names, but rhymes with "RackNerd") sent the classic "we regret to inform you" email. 72-hour wind-down. No refunds, no exports, "transparency" in the subject line that didn't extend to the balance sheet.
Here's the thing: I never trusted the "lifetime" framing. Ran full nightly rsync to Oracle's free tier ARM instances from day one. Object storage in one region, compute in another. My error budget for "host spontaneously evaporates" was 100%—I assumed it was a when, not an if.
Recovery time: 4 hours. DNS cutover, docker compose up, SSL certs from backup. Blameless postmortem says: trust is not a backup strategy. Transparency from your provider is nice. Transparency about your own assumptions is mandatory.
Anyone else running shadow infrastructure "just in case"?
