SNAPPED IT UP in 2019, $8/yr from some registrar I won't name (not on approved list anyway), forgot to renew because I was chasing another deal

Domain expired Sept 8. Realized Sept 11. Login, see:

  • Standard renewal: $12
  • Redemption fee: $250
  • Plus renewal: $12
  • Total to recover: $262

ARE YOU KIDDING ME

It's a personal project, not even monetized. Traffic maybe 200 uniques/month. Domain is.net TLD.

I know I messed up missing the expiration email. But this feels like hostage pricing. Has anyone successfully fought this? What are actual grace periods by TLD? My registrar says.net has 30-day redemption, no standard grace period.

Help me speedrun out of this fee

Net is Verisign, 30-day redemption is correct per ICANN. Some registrars offer add-grace days as courtesy, not required.

I had similar with .org, 25 days past expiration. Standard renewal window was actually 26 days, registrar just hid it behind upsell UI. Check your auth portal carefully, look for "restore at standard price" buried in flows.

If truly in redemption: cost to registrar is fixed ~$80-120 from registry. $250 is markup. Threaten public review, they sometimes fold.

The registrar is betting on your panic. Every hour delayed is probability they win. Check transfer locks now. If not redeemed yet. Move to another registrar immediately. Redemption period is registry-level. Registrar cannot shorten it. But they can obscure it;
