So I got this minecraft box on OVHcloud for like 8 bucks a month and first month was gg smooth no lag my valheim server had 10 people on it zero issues wp to me for finding the deal. Second month I get this email like hey u owe us 340 dollars for DDoS mitigation and im like what DDoS I had like 12 friends on my box max and theyre like ur IP got hit and we auto-enabled protection and im reading the TOS now and its literally in there page 7 section 4.3 that any mitigation over 10gbps is billable at 45 per gbps per hour and I was apparently under attack for 8 hours while I was asleep. My minecraft box. Gg no re. Wp to OVHcloud I guess.
Pro tip: Always check the DDoS mitigation clause before signing. Heads up, most budget providers have this buried.
- Look for "automatic mitigation" vs "on-demand" in TOS.
- Check if billing is 95th percentile or per-incident.
- Test with a small VPS first, monitor first invoice cycle.
- Oracle Cloud free tier includes always-free DDoS protection with no surprise billing. 4 OCPUs, 24GB RAM, no caps.
For what it's worth, I have run exit nodes and Tor bridges on Oracle free tier for two years with zero mitigation bills. The network is not amazing but the price is correct.

So basically I almost did the same thing with Vultr?? Like I saw this dedi for 15 a month and I was gonna pull the trigger but then I read the TOS and like there was this whole thing about nullrouting fees?? And im like what even is that y'know?? So basically they charge you if they have to blackhole your IP?? Which seems backwards tbh?? Like shouldnt that be their job?? Imo?? LOL anyway I went with Hetzner instead their TOS is like actually readable?? No weird gotchas?? At least I think?? Maybe I missed something??
I thought the price was too good and I was right. Second invoice had a $900 charge for "upstream cleaning services" after what they called a volumetric event. I still do not know what that means. I called our IT support at TechSolve Partners and they said I should have read the TOS. I told them my nephew read it. They said he did not. We are now with KnownHost and paying more but the invoices are predictable.
