My colo bill went up 40% after 5 years

This is why email people like me warn about vendor lock-in.

For what it's worth, I've had a quarter rack at Contabo since 2019. €85/month, unmetered 1Gbps, /26 included. Renewal just came: $119/month. "Market adjustments." No notice, just the invoice.

For what it's worth, I run mail infrastructure there. Three MXes, proper SPF/DKIM/DMARC (yes, aligned, before anyone asks). Moving means IP reputation death. Blocklists don't care about your "market adjustments."

Has anyone actually successfully pushed back on colo increases? Or is this just the new normal? I'm weighing self-hosting at home against eating the increase. For what it's worth, my home connection is asymmetric cable, so that's a non-starter for mail.

Ja this is the Standardbusinesspractice now nein you cannot escape it ja. I had the same Shockrechnung from OVHcloud last Quarter, my Bandwidthcommitment went up 35% for no technical Reason. I called them and the Salesperson said "globalenergycosts" which is a very nice compoundwordforavoidingblame.

Ja you should check your Servicelevelagreement for Priceprotectionclauses nein mine had none ja. Very sad.

I can't absorb a 40% hit... my margins are thin already...

I threatened to move my two racks from Hetzner to InterServer and they matched my original rate within 48 hours... my customers didn't even notice...

Why pay for colo when you can self-host it

Seriously, docker compose on a used mini PC, reverse proxy with traefik, dynamic DNS, you're out maybe $30/month power and your own hardware. I've got 40 services running at home, everything from Plex to a full mail stack (yes, with SPF/DKIM/DMARC, it's not hard). The only reason colo ever made sense was static IPs, and even that's solvable now.

  • The reverse proxy handles everything.
  • Docker compose makes it trivial.

Why pay Contabo €119 when you can self-host for a third of that after year one?

my cloud. my rules. my 3AM alerts.

Does Contabo's /26 even cover reverse DNS for three MXes?
