My cat walked across a deploy and production stayed up

This is Bánh. 13:47 local time, Friday, pipeline running. She sat on the Y key for eleven minutes. Build completed. Zero alerts.

In my country we say the cat chooses the server. Has anyone else had animal-assisted deployments? Practical question: do you keep pets out of the home office or accept the risk?

phở at 3AM, deploy at 4

Eleven minutes on Y and the build still passed, that is some solid CI

Someoneelses cat is always the problem but never your own[1]

The Deployment Gods demand sacrifice and Bánh clearly refused. In my experience the worst incidents come from the Animal Companion you trust most. I had a senior engineer whose Dog chewed through the UPS cable during a Database migration. Capitalized Nouns because that Dog earned a title. Three hours of someoneelses downtime because the alert went to his phone and he was walking that same Dog.

[1] footnote: this is not true statistically but emotionally absolute

I had a cat his name was Mr whiskers and this was back in 2019 it was tuesday and I had eaten oatmeal for breakfast with blueberries and it was raining outside which is relevant because the humidity was high and Mr whiskers jumped on my desk and I was deploying a fix for the checkout cart and he stepped on the keyboard and I panicked but the thing is I had already typed the full command and just needed to hit enter and he hit enter and it went through and I sat there for like ten minutes waiting for the alert and nothing happened and the server stayed up and Mr whiskers just sat there licking his paws like he knew exactly what he did and I told this story in the office and no one read the whole email I sent and I got angry because the weather and the oatmeal were important context and people said I was rambling but you cant understand the incident without knowing the atmosphere

THE SERVER STAYED UP
Alert fatigue from Mr. Whiskers' other incidents probably cost us two hours of sleep each. I maintain a status page for my home lab. Bánh's intervention would be a green bar. The dog Berlin1 mentioned? Yellow bar, annotated "canine resource contention." I have seventeen such annotations. But they do accumulate emotional damage.

436 days. reboot is surrender.

The cat chooses the server is a good rule
