My basement server is louder than my marriage

My spouse has informed me that our marriage shall not survive another summer with the 2U Leaseweb server in our basement. The noise exceeds 60 dB at idle. I have already replaced stock fans with Noctua units, yet the power supply remains a source of significant acoustic disturbance. I beg your indulgence for this question, but what further modifications might preserve both my server and my domestic harmony? I apologize for any inconvenience my post may cause.

Server good. Noise bad. Marriage worse. Perkele.

Noctua swap insufficient. PSU fan non-standard. Relocate or divorce.

I tried acoustic foam, rubber mounts, the works. Nothing helped. Finally moved it to a friend's colo. Sometimes the old ways are the only ways. Your marriage thanks you.

Practical options ranked by cost:

  • Garage relocation with PoE run (~$12 for 50ft cable)
  • Used 12U closet rack with door seal (~$80 local)
  • Vultr small instance as stopgap ($6/mo)

Drywall penetration for ethernet beats acoustic treatment every time. — Admin
