After explaining EPP status codes to three different clients this month, here is a concise reference.
1. Client transfer prohibited — your registrar locked it. Good. You did this, or they did it automatically. Fix: unlock at registrar. 2. Server transfer prohibited — registry-level lock. Common for ccTLDs with residency requirements. Fix: contact registry or use local presence service. 3. ClientHold — registrar suspended your domain. Usually non-payment or verification failure. Fix: pay, verify, wait. 4. ServerHold — registry suspended you. Often post-expiry or legal dispute. This is the bad one. Fix: lawyer up or grovel, depending.
Practical recommendation: check your EPP status before any migration. Use a tool that polls the registry directly, not just your registrar dashboard. Registries update faster than cPanel caches.
Fix: contact registry or use local presence service.
