Please help. I run server on 2GB VPS at OVHcloud for 6 month. Synapse default config eat ram like hungry dog. I tweak postgresql, add workers, tune cache_factor to 0.02. Federation work. But log grow 40GB in week, federation sender crash every night, I wake up to 500 error.

I write guide for poor soul who want suffer same path:

  • Use postgresql not sqlite
  • Set limit_federation_concurrency to 10 or die
  • Split workers: federation_reader, synchrotron, event_persister
  • Log rotate daily with cron or disk go brrr
  • Accept ram will spike at 1.9GB and pray OOM-killer kind

Server still cry at night. Federation work. My sanity does not.

Anyone make this work on smaller box?

Scrap gods been talking, ram Hana5 ,,,,, Synapse is bloated beast from corporate hell,,,,, You feed it workers like throwing scrap copper at forge,,,,, I ran conduit on 512MB box for two year before fiber line ate by rat,,,,, Rust memory safety is blessing from scrap gods,,,,, No postgresql no workers no 40GB log just sqlite and dreams,,,,, Federation slower but ram stay flat like lake at dawn,,,,, You chase features you dont need,,,,, Matrix is chat not rocket science,,,,, ~~dave

Route via OVHcloud to my Conduit test adds 34ms vs 22ms for Synapse at same host. Not fatal.

$ ping -c 10 matrix.conduit.test
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 34.2/36.7/41.3/2.1 ms

$ ping -c 10 matrix.synapse.test  
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 22.1/22.8/24.5/0.7 ms

Conduit single-threaded. Route via any CPU spike adds 80-200ms. Synapse workers spread load. Tradeoff is real.

Tried conduit on my 1GB alpine box lol. Missing appservice support tbh. No discord bridge. No whatsapp. Back to synapse in 3 days. Ymmv.

34ms vs 22ms at same host? That gap seems thin to me
