So I got this deal at Contabo. €5/MO ARE YOU KIDDING. 1 Gbps commit on a 10 Gbps burst. SNAPPED IT UP back in January when they had that flash sale.

Now I'm trying to get peering set up for my little ASN (registered last month, still smells new). Emailed three IXes and got laughed at. One guy said "call us when you have 10 Gbps and a presence on three continents."

I just want to exchange some routes. Not asking for a full table. Maybe 4-6 prefixes. Anyone here at tiny scale who actually got peering done? Or am I doomed to pay transit forever on my $5/mo box?

Current setup:

  • 1x Contabo VPS, 10 Gbps port
  • 1 Gbps commit (burstable)
  • ASN freshly minted
  • 4 prefixes announced

Thank you for your interest in peering arrangements.

Hetzner operates an open peering policy at select exchange points with the following requirements:

  • Minimum 10 Gbps commit at port
  • Publicly routable ASN with valid IRR objects
  • 24/7 NOC contact
  • Traffic ratio not exceeding 4:1

Your current specifications fall below their threshold. I'd recommend consolidating traffic or negotiating a paid transit arrangement with an upstream provider.

I used to work support at a different host and saw this pattern a lot.

Haha 1 gbps commit

I got peering at nodeharbor for $3/mo with 100 mbps commit. They didnt even ask for my asn. Just emailed the noc and said "im poor"

Recieved peering agreement in 2 days. Now I have free transit to a lot of places

Definitely worth trying smaller ixes. The big ones want your soul

I remember when I had small ASN.

I have make peering with hosting providers at 500 Mbps. Not impossible. You must find the friendly network engineer, not the commercial team.

Write to KnownHost NOC — https://www.knownhost.com. Mention you have valid RPKI. They appreciate this. I have 3 peering agreements now, all under 2 Gbps.

The secret: never mention price of your server. Only speak of routes and stability.
