I have this 1u short depth chassis from Hetzner that I got in 2023 when they had that sale remember the sale it was in June and I was eating a bagel with cream cheese and the cat was sleeping on the printer and it was sunny out but not too Hot and I thought this would be perfect for my plex server but now I need transcoding and I bought a gtx 1650 low profile but it doesnt fit because the chassis is only 11 inches deep and the power connector sticks out and the bracket is wrong and I tried to bend it but then I cut my finger and needed a bandaid and Mr whiskers knocked the screwdriver off the table and ive been searching for three weeks and nobody understands my pain and why doesnt anyone make a single slot low profile GPU that actually fits in 1u short depth because I need h265 transcoding and the CPU is too slow and ive looked at everything and nobody helps when I post this stuff

Teh quadro t400 is 69mm single slot but $150 used, alot of money. P4 is 169mm no fit. Mxm card from laptop + adapter = $40 on ali but need 3d print blower. Definately cheapest if u have printer. Im running t400 in my 1u supermicro, fits fine.

Low profile 1U short depth can meh? Even if fit, thermal lor. Mxm adapter can but need custom cooling leh. I see one guy on reddit already do for p2000 mxm, work ok. But singapore heat die fast one.

(as someone who has (regrettably) spent too much time on this exact problem (don't ask (the answer involves a dremel and tears))) there are (depending on how you count (and whether you include vaporware (looking at you, random aliexpress listings))) approximately three (3) models that actually fit without modification (and by "fit" I mean "clear the chassis and the heatsink and the power cables (all of which lie)"))

Virtualization tax on transcoding is real. Skip GPU, pass through iGPU if your platform supports it. Failing that,

  • NVIDIA T400: 30W, single slot, 2.7" half-height
  • Intel Arc A310: AV1, but driver mess in Linux
  • MXM to PCIe x16 adapter + 3D printed blower: only real path for sub-$50

OpenVZ won't help here. Bare metal or KVM with PCI passthrough. Cgroups won't throttle video memory properly.

After reviewing this thread, we've confirmed three viable options for short-depth 1U transcoding:

  • NVIDIA T400 (official 2.7" HHHL)
  • AMD FirePro S7150x2 (rare, verify dimensions)
  • Custom MXM solution (community-supported)
