Registrar that doesn't use 'dark patterns' at checkout.

Ngl I'm tired of clicking "no thanks" five times before I can pay for a domain. Last week I almost bought privacy protection I didn't need because the toggle was pre-checked and grayed out to look disabled. Then there was the "recommended" hosting bundle that added $80 to my cart with a tiny "remove" link.

I just want to search, add to cart, pay, leave. No upsells. No fake urgency timers. No "are you SURE you don't want protection" popups.

Does anyone use a registrar that actually respects your time? Clean UX, no dark patterns? I know this is rare in 2026 but figured I'd ask the hive mind

Privacy is the only protection you need. These registrars harvest your data anyway. Dark patterns are just the visible symptom of cloud laziness. Run your own DNS on a self-hosted resolver. I use a repurposed thin client in my closet with powerdns. Zero upsells. Zero third parties. Convenience is laziness and laziness costs more than money.

Which thin client and how much did it cost you

How does self-hosted DNS stop the registrar upsells at checkout

Grayed out toggle is the worst one
