Looking for hosting that actually runs on renewables, not just buys offsets. Done the homework on three "green" providers and the gap between marketing and reality is depressing.
Provider A: Claims 100% renewable. Their DC is in Arizona. I asked for utility bills or PPA documentation. They sent me a REC purchase certificate from a wind farm in Iowa. Their actual power: APS grid mix, ~40% natural gas. RECs cost them maybe 0.3% of power bill.
Provider B: "Carbon neutral since 2020." Diesel generator runtime during outages: 47 hours in 2024. They buy offsets for the diesel. Offsets from a forestry project in Belize that got defunded in 2022.
Provider C: Actually solar. 340kW array on roof, feeds directly into DC bus. Battery bank for transition. No RECs, no offsets, just panels and lithium. They're tiny. 2 racks. No marketing budget.
The problem: C has no affiliate program, no badge, no "green hosting" page. They just... do it.
Anyone found others in category C? Actual hardware, not accounting tricks.
