Running an old Leaseweb box with LSI 1068E. 8 bays, all populated with 2TB. Need more space, not more bays. Firmware is latest from 2014, which tells the story.
Options I've found:
Replace HBA with 9211-8I (~$40 used, known good)
External SAS expander to newer backplane (messy, more $)
Something involving firmware mods I don't trust yet
I replaced the 1068E with a 9211-8I flashed to IT mode on two servers. Clean path. No firmware mods needed. One server at InterServer, one at Hostinger. Both running 8TB Exos without issue.
