Community project to contribute to

So I have (as you do) a bunch of skills and (here's the thing) absolutely no direction. I can do ansible, some python (mediocre (don't ask)), basic networking (the kind where you break things (then fix them (usually))). Used to run a few boxes on Kimsufi back in the day (RIP (or not (they still exist (but the prices (ouch))))).

Anyway. Want to contribute to something that actually matters (or matters to someone (anyone?)). Not looking to get paid (though (let's be honest) wouldn't say no). Just... tired of my homelab being a museum of abandoned projects (the kubernetes cluster (ha (ha ha)) especially).

What are people actually working on here? Something with a future (or at least a present (not a past (looking at you (my own gitea instance (down since March)))))).

push. done. coffee.

Annexbi: "skills and absolutely no direction"

Clearly you have come to the right place, or I do not know how you say, the blind leading the blind. /s

There is the IP geolocation database project someone started, or if you prefer something with more future obviously there is my project of cataloguing every deprecated javascript framework. Very active. /s

But seriously or not seriously, the geolocation thing needs hands. They are using MaxMind format but open data. You could look at it, or whether you want to is another question.

Annexbi FIGHTING!!

The geolocation db is legit
I helped with parsing last year
Maintainer ghosted tho
Needs someone with ansible discipline

No automation at all right now
Manual server setup
Kills me

You should take it

Annexbi: "abandoned projects"

Why pay for MaxMind when you can self-host the whole geolocation stack? I run my own instance with docker compose, two containers, reverse proxy in front. Took an afternoon. The IP geolocation project @Sven3 mentioned is similar in spirit but they need the infrastructure side badly.

I wrote a compose file for them actually, PR still open. Their current setup is one VPS on OVHcloud with manual everything. You could fix that, then fix the data pipeline, then you are basically running the thing. Docker compose makes it trivial. Reverse proxy handles SSL. Self-hosting wins again.

my cloud. my rules. my 3AM alerts.

Thread cleaned. Stay on topic.

Annexbi: contact the geolocation project maintainers directly. Their info is in the sticky. Do not make us hold your hand.

No logs, no proof. I have logs.

Annexbi, to little project I say: take it!

I run my own geolocation in home szerwer, no? With docker compose and to backup every day. Very nice, very small script for it.

The database needs person with discipline. You have discipline, no? From your parentheticals I see... maybe not, no? But try! Voilà, I think you fit.

Pro tip: start with CI/CD to server, then you are maintainer in six months, no?

it works in my container

What's the server stack for the geolocation db

#8

The maintainer ghosted? Is there a fork, or is the data stale now?

#9

I had a kimsufi box too, 2017 maybe

Update: maintainer posted last week actually
Just... not in the repo
Some discord somewhere
Data pipeline is fine, ingestion runs daily

The ansible gap is real tho
They still ssh into boxes and run apt manually
I died a little watching it
