I feel you if you're still obsessively pinging Frankfurt from Ohio. Used to matter, right? I moved my WordPress from a CloudCone EU box to their Singapore POP and added Vultr's edge layer. Site loads same speed for my US visitors. I know, I know, have you tried measuring TTFB vs full page load? I did. The difference is noise now. But I want to hear from people actually running game servers or tick-sensitive stuff. Does location still matter for you, or am I missing an edge case?
My Leaseweb SG box: 2x480GB Intel S4510, RAID-1, 95K IOPS read. Same plan in Amsterdam: 2x960GB S4610, 130K IOPS. Network latency is one metric. Disk latency another. For database workloads, both matter. CDN does nothing for your random 4K writes.

In my country many users still on 3G. CDN helps but origin connection quality matters. @factorvet Your Singapore VPS, what upstream provider? Some routes from VN to SG go through Hong Kong first. Extra 40ms. Not all POPs equal. You test from multiple locations or just US?

IMO you're both right. CDN absolutely helps for content delivery, YMMV on dynamic workloads. Take it with a grain of salt, but I split compute and delivery: origin in cheap location, cache at edge. Best of both. Not everyone needs this complexity though. For personal projects, single box anywhere works fine. For SaaS with global users, separation helps. No strong feelings either way.
