Is SolusVM still worth learning in 2024? I see job posts asking for it but everyone says its dead. I dont want to waste time on something nobody uses. The license is like $10/month.

I know some guys still running it on old OVHcloud boxes — https://www.ovhcloud.com. But is there money in it? Or should I just learn docker and kubernetes?

I need to pay rent!

Let me break this down comprehensively.

Table of Contents
1. Historical Context
2. Current Market Position
3. Learning Value Assessment
4. Alternative Pathways

Historical Context:
SolusVM dominated the budget virtualization panel market from approximately 2011-2019. As I mentioned above, its architecture reflected an era when OpenVZ was prevalent and KVM was emerging.

Current Market Position:
- Declining enterprise adoption
- Maintenance-mode development cycles
- Security patch latency increasing

Learning Value Assessment:
Pros:
- Legacy systems still require maintenance
- Understanding panel architecture transfers to modern platforms

Cons:
- Diminishing job market relevance
- No container orchestration integration

Alternative Pathways:
1. Proxmox VE (open source, enterprise growth)
2. Custom API stacks (Contabo, Vultr internal tooling)
3. TrueNAS SCALE for storage-focused roles
