Is it acceptable to judge a café by its Wi-Fi captive portal design

Someone asked me this yesterday and I have been unable to stop Thinking about it. The answer is obviously yes and in fact it is the only metric that matters. The captive portal is the Soul[1] of the establishment, the first Contact between your Device and their Network Infrastructure, and if they cannot be bothered to make it legible then their espresso is also Someone elses problem.

I have begun Documentation. The worst so far: a shopping mall in Prague that makes you watch a thirty second Animation of their Mascot before presenting TermsOfService in seven point Arial. The best: a library in Oslo that simply says "hello" and gives you a Poem.

I propose we Collaborate. Spreadsheet link below. Rate your portals. Judge harshly. The world must know.

Thank you for making this thread, very interesting idea lah. In Jakarta many captive portal can not even load properly, slow-slow then timeout. Can you imagine, customer want to check email but must wait first for the banner advertisement to finish. Very frustrating wkwkwk.

I add two entries from Bandung, one from Surabaya. The Bandung cafe using simple password on wall, no portal at all. Actually I respect this, clean and no problem. Thank you.

wrap it, ship it, pray it

Complication is the enemy
The oslo library understands
The prague mall does not

Oh this is fun! I just added four from my last trip—did you test your restore process on that spreadsheet though? I hope someone is making copies. 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two media types, one offsite. I've seen too many community projects vanish when the single Google account gets locked.

My worst: a chain in Berlin that made you create an Account with verified phone number. For thirty minutes of Wi-Fi. Unbelievable.

3-2-1 or you're already dead

200 entries across twelve countries and we're out here doing God's work apparently with the spreadsheet cult

¡the spreadsheet is beautiful work my friends! I add three from Buenos Aires, one from Córdoba the city big. The portal red of one pizzería, very ugly, but the coffee strong so I forgive them a little.

The server captive of good design is rare like the unicorn! We must protect the libraries simple, the cafes with password wall. ¡Down with the mascot animation!
