IPv6-only VPS as secondary DNS: practical or pain?

Experiment report: IPv6-only VPS as secondary DNS for my personal zones.

Setup: OVHcloud 2 EUR/month instance, no legacy IP. Primary on another box with dual-stack. Monitored for 30 days.

Findings:

  • Google, Cloudflare, Quad9 resolvers all handle it fine.
  • My registrar's panel rejects AAAA-only glue records with "invalid nameserver." The ticket said... "IPv6 is not supported for DNS configuration at this time." Dated 2025, somehow.

Workaround: used a different registrar's DNS hosting as intermediary. Not ideal. Documented steps below if anyone wants to replicate.

reported. resolved. repeat.
