The services behind it. Migrated my entire docker compose stack to IPv6-only on a HostHatch VPS three months ago. Reverse proxy handles the odd legacy client via Cloudflare tunnel for now. Here's what broke and what didn't:

  • My home ISP (cable, US midwest): no IPv6 at all, had to use HE tunnelbroker
  • Old android phone on lineageos: fine actually
  • Some "enterprise" monitoring tools: hardcoded IPv4 literals everywhere
  • My mother's ability to visit the site: zero

Waiting for the day I can drop the tunnel entirely. Not there yet but closer than I expected.

InterServer (yeah I work there, full disclosure) just announced IPv4 surcharge for new deploys and the math changed FAST. Legacy blocks cost us absurd money now. Your migration timing is kinda perfect @SamAlvi

The compatibility issues are present only, but the cost savings are substantial only. Kindly you may consider the following for migration planning:

  • Ensure your DNS has AAAA records properly
  • Test with ipv6-test.com equivalent before going live
  • Keep dual-stack proxy for critical endpoints initially

The major CDN providers will follow suit shortly, I am predicting this with confidence.

¡the server red in my rack is IPv6-only already! The problems are few, the benefits many. Vos you have the reverse proxy which docker compose? I want to copy the configuration. The surcharge IPv4 from GreenCloudVPS came yesterday, ¡the price double! Is viable now more than before, no?

Can lah. My setup IPv6-only already 2 year. Use caddy lor, automatic HTTPS no problem. IPv4 surcharge from Vultr also kena, now pay extra 5 USD for /32. Sibei sian. But heng my side all can alr. Mother still cannot visit lor, buy her new phone lah. Simple.
