How I run 12kW in a 10kW rack without tripping breakers

I have been operating a 42U at OVHcloud FRA1 since March. The rack is sold as 10kW A+B feed, 16A per side at 230V. My actual sustained load is 11.8-12.1kW. Here is how I stay online without breaker trips.

  • Phase balancing: I measure each circuit with Fluke clamp meters weekly. Target is +/- 0.3A between L1/L2/L3 on each feed.
  • Non-simultaneous redundancy: A-side runs 6.2kW, B-side runs 5.9kW. If A fails, B sees 30s spike before ATS sheds non-critical.
  • Custom PDU alerting: SNMP traps at 14.5A, hard cut at 15.5A via relay. The vendor threshold was 15.9A, too close for my taste.
  • Seasonal derating: July-August I cap at 10.5kW. Ambient matters.
The 80% rule is conservative for modern breakers with B-curve trip. IEC 60898 allows 1.13x indefinitely, 1.45x for one hour. I operate at 0.81x per feed, 0.97x combined. As far as I know, this is compliant with OVHcloud's terms, though I have not asked directly. I will cross-post to the power thread once I have one year of data. My logging granularity is 1 minute via modbus.
