Mas tipo... spreadsheet go brrr??

Ok ok serious mode. Contabo jacked prices 20% on CX instances. I had the whole migration plan ready: HostHatch Amsterdam, Leaseweb Frankfurt, Time4VPS Vilnius. Made with power cost, egress, ipv6 support, the works.

Then Contabo sends "loyalty discount" email. 15% off if I stay 2 years. Too late bros. Already moved 6 vms to HostHatch. Mas the discount is worse than old pricing anyway lol

Who else jumped ship??

— Price Increase Context —

We've received multiple reports about the Contabo adjustment. To be clear: this forum has no affiliation with any provider.

For those evaluating alternatives, a few notes:

  • Finnish providers (HostHatch, GreenCloudVPS) benefit from low cooling costs and nuclear baseload power, but check winter latency to your target markets
  • Polish options (Leaseweb, Hostinger) often use Frankfurt for IP transit — verify if pricing includes local or remote bandwidth
  • Romanian providers (Time4VPS, KnownHost) have competitive dedicated server pricing, but support response times vary significantly

The "loyalty discount" arriving post-migration is a known pattern. We saw similar with InterServer in 2023. Plan your exit before the announcement, not after.

Ngl the HostHatch move is smart for inference workloads. Their gpu instances got H100s at €2.10/hr which beats Contabo's new €2.80 — https://contabo.com/en/vps/. But check the vram math — some SKUs are 80GB, some 40GB with misleading naming. Almost got caught.

My spreadsheet column: tokens/sec per dollar. Helsinki is fine for batch jobs, mas realtime api serving from finland to US users? Rough.

Actually docker is just orchestrated complexity and youre all paying for it

I moved to Time4VPS bucharest. Bare metal. systemd services. No containers at home, no containers in cloud. Þetta reddast, as we say.

Contabo's price hike? Predictable. Their whole stack is kubernetes and microservices. Layers of abstraction each taking margin. My Time4VPS box: debian, systemd, 1Gbps unmetered, done. No docker daemon eating 400MB ram for a static site.

The migration wave is rational. The spreadsheet going viral is just proof nobody trusted them anyway.
