Hetzner honored a 2019 75% off lifetime promo code I found

So I was cleaning out an old notebook and found a screencap from 2019 with a 75% off lifetime code for Hetzner's shared tier. Figured it was worth a shot for laughs. Entered it in the cart on a whim 1GB plan... and it applied. $9/year. Got the welcome email, login works, cPanel loads. :)

I DM'd their Twitter mostly to warn them. They replied publicly calling it "a bug in legacy coupon validation" and said they'd honor existing activations but patched it "to align with industry-standard upstream billing practices."

Anyone else catch this before the window closed? Curious if I'm the only one with ancient screenshots laying around.

IMO you got lucky and should take it with a grain of salt whether it stays honored long-term. YMMV but I've seen "honored" turn into "account review" six months later. Back up anything you put there, just in case.

Insane value!! Even at 1GB that's runs circles around what you'd pay for ARM VPS at that price point! I grabbed a 2019 OVHcloud code once but it was dead dead dead. What CPU they running behind that shared tier??

"honored" turning into review six months later sounds about right

I give it three months before "account review"

This is the real advice. I stand by the three month guess but even if they honor it forever, it's a $9 shared host. Treat it as ephemeral by default.

Has anyone actually tested what happens when you try to renew. Is it locked at $9 or does the code re-apply automatically

Update: still working after 8 months. No account review, no price hike, nothing weird in the TOS changes either.

I did take quinnbizz's advice and keep backups though. Better lucky than sorry.

Curious if they actually sent anything formal about the "existing activations" language or if that's just social media speak.
