  • I am currently paying for 3 idle VPS instances across 2 providers.
  • Specifications: 2 vCPU / 4GB RAM / 80GB SSD, Debian 12.2, provisioned 2024-03-15.
  • Monthly burn: $17.97 USD.
  • Root cause: automation scripts that provisioned DR environments for a project that was cancelled in Q2 2024.
  • Discovery date: 2026-01-20 during routine audit.

I have since implemented a monthly calendar reminder and tagging convention in my infrastructure-as-code. Recommend you do the same if you maintain more than 5 instances.

I've got a quarter rack in a facility I haven't visited in 14 months. Dell R640, 2x Xeon Silver 4214, pulling 340W at idle. Shipping that thing back costs more than the power draw. Hardware's different, same trap.

Oh man this thread is speaking to my soul (or what's left of it after all these years of just throwing money into the void) because I was just looking at my billing dashboard last tuesday (or was it wednesday, time blurs when you're staring at invoices) and I realized I have this KnownHost instance that I spun up for a client project back in 2022 (the client ghosted me, classic, happens to everyone right) and I've been paying $8.99 a month for what, 47 months now, that's like $423 and change and I haven't logged into it once since the client disappeared (I should probably check if it's been compromised and is part of a botnet, that would be ironic, paying to host someone else's criminal enterprise) and then there's the GreenCloudVPS storage bucket I made for personal backups that I never actually configured the sync client for so it's just empty but still billing and the RackNerd ARM box I

I have like 7 idle boxes. I think I am at ~$80/mo for garbage. One of them I keep meaning to use for a pihole but I never do. You are all my people.

I prefer not to discuss specific holdings. Let's say certain resources are held in reserve for future optimization opportunities. Electricity costs in my primary region have shifted the calculus. The idle capacity represents strategic positioning, not waste.
