'green hosting' is mostly marketing

So I actually spent last weekend reading the sustainability Reports of like twelve different Providers bro and what I found actually made me angry basically everyone is just buying Renewable Energy Credits to offset their dirty Grid power and then calling it 100% green hosting. The Prices for these RECs are like $2-5 per MWh which means for a typical 10kW rack they are paying maybe $15/month to greenwash their entire operation. Meanwhile I found maybe two Providers who actually have direct Power Purchase Agreements with solar Farms and you can actually verify this in the PPA Registries the rest is just creative Accounting! I actually want to be wrong about this so tell me what I missed

REC bad. PPA good. Simple.

Contabo has PPA. Verified. RackNerd does not. Perkele.

Greenwashing everywhere. Price too low to be real. $2/MWh is joke.

Additionality is the word you're looking for.

Offsets pay for what already exists.
PPAs build what does not.

Simple is better.

The ticket said: "your so-called green server melted the ice caps anyway because I had to run my AC harder, refund expected"

We get these. Monthly. Provider bought RECs, slapped leaf logo on homepage, customer in Phoenix runs AC 24/7, somehow this is our fault. The accounting never includes the heat you pump into your own room.

reported. resolved. repeat.

The wind you cannot see — the sun you cannot hold — these the green merchant sells twice is it

The PPA truth the customer finds only in the fine print — the additionality the only green that matters ji

Vultr and Hetzner both the real PPA path walk — the others the shadow buy —

grabs popcorn, checks /r/drama
