I am 31, I make a server up since I am 19. Never have degree. Now I am senior SRE at mid-size company but I feel the ceiling. New jobs ask for "BS or equivalent experience" but I see they prefer the BS.

I have save some money. My options:

  • Part-time online degree, 3-4 years, keep job
  • Full-time 2 years, lose salary
  • Bootcamp + certifications, faster but less depth

Regards to all who have done this. What is real opportunity cost? I think I lose maybe 200k$ if I stop working 2 years. But maybe I gain more after? I do not know.

I am afraid to be too old also. 😊

SWEdish system is different but I have seen this.

Fika with colleague who did part-time at KTH. Took 5 years, hösting company pay 50%. Now she is VP. "Fika" the stress away, do not rush.

Üniversity name matters less than you think. The network matters more.
