Four years ago I started this forum's most cursed infrastructure project. My "server" was a 2012 MacBook Pro in a closet, running Docker Compose with Traefik reverse proxy, handling actual production traffic for my side projects.

The specs: 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, battery swollen to twice its size. I wedged a Noctua fan under it. The closet hit 45C in summer. I replaced the thermal paste three times.

Today I migrated to actual datacenter space at Contabo. Photos attached (closet shrine vs. Real rack). I feel conflicted. The MacBook never went down. The reverse proxy never flinched.

Why pay? Because my partner threatened to call the fire department. Fair enough.

Yes the Closetshrine is impressive no the Thermaldesign is criminal yes the Swollenbattery is a Firehazard no you should not have waited four Years yes the Rackmountaesthetic is superior no I cannot believe the Dockercompose survived on Consumerhardware this long yes

  • Reverse proxy exposed to internet from residential IP!

What could go wrong: everything. What did go wrong: apparently nothing, which is worse because now you think this is acceptable.

Please tell me you at least had a firewall. 👀

Kiddo you ran production on a laptop for four years? That is the most beautiful shitf I have ever seen. I am not mad I am impressed. My first server was a toaster with a serial port. You have earned the rackspace. Congratulations kiddo!

Please to confirm: the MacBook Battery remains in Storage? Or was it recycled through proper E-Waste Channels?

The Closet Temperature of forty-five Celsius exceeds the recommended Operating Range for most Network Equipment by fifteen Degrees. Your Reverse Proxy Configuration must have been robust indeed.
