Finally moved last client off GoDaddy

3 years, 47 domains, 12 WordPress sites, 2 custom apps. Ngl the final migration finished at 2am last night and I just stared at the terminal

Last holdout was a client who "liked the interface" and didn't trust "small hosts." showed him the renewal invoice ($287 for a basic shared plan) and he finally agreed.

Everything's on Vultr now. LLM inference endpoint + static sites + email. Costs 1/4, performs 4x on VRAM-limited workloads.

GD exit checklist for anyone still trapped:

  • Export DNS zone file BEFORE touching anything
  • Screenshot all email forwarders, they vanish
  • Unlock domains 7 days early, their "instant" is 24hr
  • Auth codes expire in 30 days, not standard 60
  • Expect 3 retention calls minimum

Who else is free? How long did your escape take?

Vultr pricing is decent but I always worry about single-provider dependency. Your client paid $287 for basic shared? That is robbery even by GD standards. I would have moved at $100.

Kids these days with your "cloud" and your "terraform"

Back in '97 I moved a client off compuserve by editing zone files with edlin on a 2400 baud modem. Took six weeks. Now you kids complain about three years?

Right then, cheers lads

We've had a few escapees land at Hostinger with horror stories. One chap's "unlimited" bandwidth got throttled at 200GB because he was "using it like a business." well yes, mate, that's what the invoice said.

Proper tip: GD's email migration tool is proper broken. We ended up writing a custom imapsync wrapper for a client. Honest? Our docs now have a whole "coming from the big orange" section. Not proud, but there it is.

Hey folks, friendly reminder: we don't allow direct links to competitor control panels or screenshots with visible account numbers.

The checklist garykwh posted is solid general advice for any migration. If someone wants to share their "GD exit checklist" as a text file attachment, that's fine.

Also: the retention call stories are funny, but let's not post alleged rep names or direct quotes from phone calls. Keeps us all out of trouble.

Thread stays open, good support group energy here.
