Finally down to 12 domains from 67. Feels good.

Started 2023 with acquisition fever. Every flash sale, every dropped auction, every hand-reg I convinced myself was strategic. The renewal bill last December was the wakeup call.

Audit process:

  • Traffic logs: 51 domains had zero resolving queries in 90 days
  • Project match: 38 no longer mapped to active work
  • Emotional value: admitted 12 were purely 'sounds cool'

Kept 12 with actual revenue attachment or clear 2026 project pipeline.

Total recovered: $1,847/year in renewals. Time spent managing DNS cut by ~70%.

Anyone else done this? The psychological relief surprised me more than the money.

The Domain Audit Process please to follow:

  • Step One: Export all Renewal Dates and Costs into Spreadsheet
  • Step Two: Categorize by Project Status and Revenue Attachment
  • Step Three: Calculate Total Cost of Ownership for five Years
  • Step Four: Delete everything without Business Case

I have reduced from 34 to 7 Domains in January 2025
Annual Savings: 847 Euro
Time spent on DNS Management: near zero

The Relief is real and measurable

Did similar with hardware last year had 23 old servers in colo burning 4kW combined shipped 19 to recycler kept 3x Dell R740xd for actual workloads power bill dropped $340/month rack space down from 8U to 2U the mental load of inventorying spare parts every quarter was worse than the money domains are just lighter versions of the same hoarding impulse

Hans-Georg please share template

Template is simple Excel I will describe here:

Column A: Domain Name
Column B: Registrar
Column C: Renewal Date
Column D: Annual Cost in Euro
Column E: Project Status (Active / Stalled / Dead / Never Started)
Column F: Revenue Attachment (Yes / No / Indirect)
Column G: 5-Year TCO (=D*5)
Column H: Decision (Keep / Drop / Transfer / Sell)

Filter Column E for Dead and Column F for No these are your drops

I use conditional formatting red for over 50 Euro per year yellow for 20-50 green under 20

No magic just discipline

I had 54 domains mostly .id and .asia for projects that never launched down to 8 now the .id renewals at Jagat Domains were killing me 280k IDR each doesn't sound much until you multiply by 30

Saved: ~7.5 million IDR/year

Still keep one .asia that redirects to my main VPS panel rest are gone
