Contabo 1GB KVM, Debian 12. Expected disaster. Got this instead.

$ ./yabs.sh -ig
fio test:
  read: 82.4 MB/s (4k)
  write: 41.2 MB/s (4k)

iperf3:
  send: 489 Mbits/sec
  recieve: 512 Mbits/sec

Decent disk IO, meh network

Then I spent 40 hours in PaperMC configs. Results:

  • -Xms768M -Xmx1024M (G1GC, tight)
  • View-distance: 4, simulation-distance: 3
  • Max-tick-time: -1 (risky, needed)
  • Entity-activation-range: animals 12, monsters 24
  • Chunk-loading: async-chunks: true
  • Spark profiler running, no leaks found

15 players, 3 weeks, zero crashes. TPS hovers 18-19. I am as confused as you are.

fio, iperf, geekbench. results or gtfo.

Verify your restores

I ran a similar "miracle" setup on [OVHcloud](https://www.ovhcloud.com) for 8 months. World corrupted during a "routine" backup that I never tested. 6 players lost 3 weeks of builds.

Your spark numbers mean nothing if the backup is a black box. Test the restore. Weekly. I learned this the hard way.

The €3 Contabo deal is still alive btw

Im running paper 1.20.4 on there too
Definitely works with 12 players
A lot of tweaking tho
Receive my config if u want

$4 gets u 2gb at InterServer but their disk is slower

$3/year. 128MB RAM. Pure happiness.

Your bandwidth math: 15 players × 80 kbps upstream each = 1.2 Mbps base. Burst to 50 kbps per chunk load.

No DDoS angle here, just noting that your 489 Mbps iperf is irrelevant. Minecraft is UDP-like TCP, small packets, sensitive to loss. Your provider's upstream congestion matters more than bench numbers.

mitigated 800Gbps before breakfast

Blameless postmortem framing: what happens at player 16?

You have no error budget defined. TPS 18-19 is already degraded. I admire the transparency of sharing this, but "somehow" is not a reliability strategy.

What is your graceful degradation plan? Simulation distance 2? Queueing players?

What cpu is Contabo actually giving you

Emre10 they never list it, check /proc/cpuinfo yourself and pray.

PaperMC with 768M heap is black magic honestly.

CUDA cores are my love language
