After six months of refinement, I have achieved proper 3-2-1 backup compliance at minimal cost. Configuration as follows:

  • Primary data: GreenCloudVPS VPS, 1 vCPU, 1GB RAM, 20GB NVMe, $10/year, located in their FRA zone
  • Daily incremental rclone to HostHatch storage VPS, $30/year, AMS zone
  • Weekly full restic to CloudCone storage VPS, 50GB, $12/year, NYC zone

All traffic encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM via restic, age for rclone). Verification via monthly restore tests to local Proxmox. RTO approximately four hours, RPO twenty-four hours.

Total: $52/year. This satisfies 3 copies, 2 media types, 1 offsite. I am documenting this for others pursuing similar constraints. Happy to detail the systemd timers or wireguard mesh if useful.

Simple is not the same as fragile
