So heres the thing about colo contracts and crypto clauses (and ive seen a bunch of them because I read these things which most people dont do they just sign and hope) the power density is the real issue not the morality of whether youre mining dogecoin or folding proteins or whatever because at the end of the day a kilowatt is a kilowatt but the problem is that mining rigs tend to run at 100% sustained load 24/7 which is actually different from most server workloads that have peaks and valleys (like your typical web server that idles at 10% and spikes to 80% during traffic) and the colo provider has to provision power and cooling for the worst case scenario and if everyone suddenly ran at 95% sustained the electrical infrastructure would melt (not literally but you get the idea) and the breaker panels are sized for average load not peak sustained and this is why they care and also the h

Escalated this to our legal team last quarter actually :-|

As per my last update, we added the same clause to all new contracts after a known issue where a single client drew 18kW in a 5kW commit. Workaround was remote PDU shutdown. Not pretty.

Ticket #28471 for reference if anyone wants the full postmortem :-|

436 days. reboot is surrender.
