Cheap NVMe storage VPS for Plex, does anyone actually stream 4K?

So I want to make a Plex server on cheap NVMe VPS. I found some deals with 2TB storage for like $6/month and I am thinking... can this actually stream 4K to my family in Brazil? My home internet is fiber 500mbps so I think is very good, but I dont know if the VPS can handle transcode. We make a test or what? Anyone here running 4K on budget box?

Always chasing specs they cannot feed... I ran plex on a pentium 4 in 2012... never needed nvme for a stream... the bottleneck was always the pipe leaving the house... three dots for emphasis... your upload matters more than their cpu...

Right then, mate of mine tried this on our cheapest NVMe plan. Direct play 4K? Fine. One transcode? Stutter city. Proper x265 80mbit remux? Forget it. The CPU on these budget boxes is older than my nan. Cheers lads

Virtualization tax hits hard here.

  • OpenVZ cant do docker properly
  • KVM with cgroup limits throttles burst transcoding
Real question is hw transcoding availability. Most budget hosts disable it. Without quicksync or vaapi youre eating cpu cycles for h265. check if your provider even exposes dev/dri

Ive got mine on a $4 box with 1gb ram, no issues direct streaming. Transcoding is the enemy, not the solution. Set your clients to direct play and stop this madness. docker compose yml is trivial
