Another country mandates RPKI, what changes?

Just read the announcement. Starting 2027, all BGP announcements must have valid ROA. Origin validation required at all IXes.

WARNING: This is good for security but implementation pain will be REAL. What could go wrong:

• Invalid ROAs from lazy upstreams dropping prefixes
• RPKI validators as new single point of failure
• Route leaks with "valid" ROAs still possible (path validation not required)
• Small operators locked out if RIR fees increase

I run fail2ban on my RPKI validator already. Firewall tight. But what about you folks in affected region? Timeline actually firm or flexible?

Oracle free tier VPS works as backup validator host. Recommend.

Nag-install ako ng RPKI validator last month, sobrang mabagal pa rin diba? Super many bug in software. I use Routinator, super easy to setup pero memory usage super high.

My upstream from that country say "2027 sure na" pero my friend there say NOC super not ready. Diba? No past tense marker needed, still chaos now.

I think deadline slip one year. Super common with this kind of rule.

Can confirm. Running Routinator 0.13 on a 2GB VPS in Vienna, it idles at 1.4GB resident. The RTR cache is the killer. Switched to rpki-client from OpenBSD for my lab setup, much leaner, but the CLI-only workflow is not for everyone.

Austrian IXes are not affected by this 2027 rule, but our German neighbors will be. I peer at DE-CIX Frankfurt and already see the filtering creeping in. Some networks there drop invalids voluntarily since 2023. The pain is already real for cross-border traffic.

My prediction: the real chaos happens not at deadline but 6 months before, when everyone rushes to create ROAs and the RIR ticket queues explode.

Oracle free tier is a trap. They terminate accounts with no warning and their support is a black hole. I lost a validator node that way in 2022. Never again.

For RPKI in France, OVH VPS is cheap enough and actually stays up. I run two validators, one in Gravelines, one in Strasbourg. Different power grids, different risks.

The 2027 mandate is going to hurt small hosting collectives in France hard. Many still have /24s from grandfathered RIPE allocations with no ROA because the old admin left and nobody has the RIR portal password.

This. RIPE NCC support was already slow in 2024. I waited three weeks for a simple ASN transfer. If every Portuguese hosting company and their cousin suddenly needs ROA help in late 2026, good luck.

MEO and NOS, the big ISPs here, will be fine. They have teams for this. The problem is the long tail of enterprises with a /22 they announce once and forget about. Those prefixes will just vanish from the affected country.

Fair warning taken. I have three validators now, not two. Oracle is the third, not the only.

The real question nobody is asking: what happens to CDNs and anycast? A valid ROA for your anycast prefix at origin, but what if one of your PoPs leaks a more specific? Path validation is NOT required in this mandate. You can have a "valid" hijack.

I tested this in lab. Announced a /24 with valid ROA, then leaked a /28 more specific internally. Upstream with origin validation only? Passed through. Scary.

Oracle free tier best deal but you need Turkey phone number now, they block many VOIP. I help three friends get account, two terminated in 6 month. Third still alive but he check email every day like paranoid.

For RPKI validator I use Contabo VPS, 4GB RAM 5 euro month. Routinator run fine. Contabo in Germany so latency to RIPE good.

Turkey not in EU so this 2027 rule not direct problem. But we peer much with EU, filter will hit us same.

Japan slipped IPv6 mandate three times. 2015, 2020, 2022. Still not really enforced. Government deadlines for infrastructure are flexible everywhere.

But the difference here is IXes doing the enforcement, not government inspectors. If DE-CIX and others flip the switch, the deadline is whatever they say. No slip possible if your packets drop.

My Minecraft server peers at JPNAP. Not affected. But I watch this for my day job at a cloud reseller. We have EU customers who will blame us when their routes die.

Same problem in Philippines! Many old ISP here have /24 from APNIC long time ago. Admin already retire or die. Password lost. APNIC recovery process need company documents, some company already closed but prefix still announce by who?

This is big problem for developing country. Rich country have RIR fees and staff. Poor country have legacy mess.
