Back in 2009 I ran my sites on a $6/month shared plan with monthly billing. If the host went bad I walked away. Lost nothing but a month.
Now these providers want 40% off if you pay a year upfront. Sounds good until youre trapped on a oversold node for 10 months because you already paid. They dont make them like that anymore.
Saw this with GreenCloudVPS last year. Node went to hell in month 3. Support tickets took days. But I had 9 months prepaid so I stayed and suffered instead of cutting losses. The discount became a trap.
Cash flow shouldnt lock you in. Monthly should be the default. Annual discount is just churn reduction math wearing a friendly mask.
