Almost bought a 'lifetime' deal

Hi all — wanted to share what I found poking around before pulling the trigger on a "lifetime VPS" from Hetzner.

  • Offer: €89 one-time for 2GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 40GB SSD, "unmetered" bandwidth
  • Red flag: WHOIS shows Hetzner registered 4 months ago
  • Bigger red flag: their "about us" claims owned infrastructure in Frankfurt

I asked sales which DC they use. Three emails, three different answers. Finally got "we partner with OVHcloud for capacity."

Checked OVHcloud's public reseller terms. No lifetime resale permitted. Hetzner is essentially pre-selling OVHcloud monthly instances and gambling on churn rates.

(oh this is familiar) (the whole "lifetime" thing) (I looked at one from Hostinger last year) (they were reselling RackNerd I think?) (or maybe it was GreenCloudVPS) (same pattern) (the math never works) (unless they expect you to forget you paid) (which... some people do?) (the real margin is in the people who buy and never use it) (like gym memberships) (but for servers)

push. done. coffee.

Actually docker is just process isolation with extra steps. Þese "lifetime" hosts are just systemd units on someone elses box. Þe real crime is þeyre probably running openvz on a single e5 v2. No containers at home. I run everything on bare metal with systemd-nspawn and þe host will outlive þe "lifetime" deal.
