Accidentally rm -rf / on VPS, recovery options from provider snapshot?

So I run 52 boxes across 7 providers (best $/GB/RAM is still Hetzner for storage, fight me) and I have NEVER done this until tonight. Was updating a script, had SSH into wrong terminal, typed the magic words, watched 2 years of config vanish in 12 seconds. 😂

This is on Contabo VPS-4 plan. I KNOW they have snapshots because I saw the option in panel. But I also remember... clicking something about "disable auto-snapshots to reduce invoice" maybe? Please tell me there is still a manual snapshot or I am going to cry into my cost spreadsheet.

What is actual recovery flow? Do I open ticket first or just hit restore in panel? Does IP stay same? I have 3 client sites on this box, none backed up elsewhere because I am idiot who trusts RAID.

Help me forum, you are my only hope.

Is very bad situation, brother!! I make restore from snapshot many time, is easy process good.

First, check panel manual, look button "snapshots" in server management. If snapshot exists, restore is quick, server good again in 10 minute. If no snapshot... ¿why not¡ you have problem big.

How much cost the snapshot storage? Usually is cheap, but you disable for save dollar. The Contabo support is fast, I think, open ticket also good idea.

Is your server production? If yes, maybe make new server temporary, point DNS, then restore old after. This way downtime small.

¡Good luck!

Oh no, the internet box! My nephew set this up for our company website and I always tell him to make copies but he says the IT people at HostHatch handle it. I did not know you could delete the whole thing with one command.

We use Vultr for our shop and they have a "rewind" button in the panel, is that the same as snapshot? I pressed it once by accident and it made everything from Tuesday come back.

For you I think call Contabo support immediately, they are the IT support vendor you pay. CAPITALIZE on their help desk. My nephew says they answer in 15 minutes usually. Their panel is at https://my.contabo.com if you need to check while waiting.

Do you have the password for the panel still? That is step one. Step two is find the button. Step three is pray.

Oh no. The auto-snapshot disable. I did this too once. On Hostinger. Cost me a weekend. Never again. Manual snapshots exist but only if you made one. Contabo keeps them for 30 days max. Check now. If nothing there. Ticket wont help. They are clear in ToS. User-disabled means user-responsible. Learned this the hard way. $1/month is expensive lesson. But lesson learned...
