6 months with a GRE tunnel to my basement

6 months with GRE tunnel to my basement. Contabo VPS in Munich, tunnel back to Ankara, running full BGP to my little MikroTik. Cost is 4€/month. You cant beat this.

Stability: 99.97% until last Tuesday. Power outage in my building, UPS died after 45min, whole thing collapsed. But 6 months before that? Perfect. Latency 34ms, no packet loss, even streamed 4K over it once for test.

/interface gre add name=to-basement local-address=185.x.x.x remote-address=contabo.com
Now rebuilding with bigger UPS. Going to document whole thing if anyone wants. AMA!

çok ucuz, çok hızlı

Running full BGP

Clarification: you are not running "full BGP" if you are announcing a single prefix over a GRE tunnel. You are running BGP over GRE, which is standard. Full BGP implies accepting the global routing table, which on a 4€ VPS would exhaust both RAM and CPU.

That said, your design is sound for a hobbyist setup. Consider adding BFD to your GRE session for faster failure detection. Without it, BGP hold timers default to 180 seconds—your outage would have been detected faster with:

/routing bfd interface add interface=to-basement

Also: no RPKI on a tunnel this length? IRR at minimum.

iBGP, eBGP, don't care, just peer

Cool project
How much throughput
You actually getting
Through the tunnel
I tried similar
With InterServer https://www.interserver.net/vps/
Last year
50mbit max
They shaped it
Or my config was wrong
Probably my config
Never got it stable
Gave up after 3 days

You are brave bro. I tried same with GreenCloudVPS, think I had GRE up 2 days then server crashed. Maybe my basement too hot. Thanks for UPS tip, going to try again with big battery. Maybe going to last 4 days this time

The classic basement tunnel bro. I did this wih CloudCone last month. Runs for 2 days then my isp changed ip and boom. No statc ip no glory. I refuse to edit posts ever. My config had double nat and everything still worked somehow. The magic of linux. Dont ask me for help I dont undrstand how I did it
