- what I disabled:

  • Windows search
  • Superfetch/sysmain
  • Diagnostic policy
  • Windows update (manual only)
  • Everything in server manager dashboard
    - NOTE: still 680MB idle
    - registry hacks tried:
    -
    • Disable memory compression
    • Reduce worker threads
    • Legacy balloontip off

- WARNING: broke RDP once
- current state:
- runs file share
- barely

Has anyone made this bearable or is this just penance

A stripped file server or RDP gateway? Yes.

The trick is Server Core if your provider offers it. No GUI, ~300MB base. Most Linux folks forget that option exists.

Sir, I made VPS last month with Windows Server 2022, 1GB. I disabled same services as you, plus remote registry and fax service. Idle now 590MB.

Thank you very much, it runs IIS for small API only. Not fast but working

Actually docker is just linux containers so this doesnt apply

But seriously why windows. systemd on debian uses 80MB. You could run actual services. Þis is þe way

Reykjavik_doc you are not wrong but OP said file share. Samba on 1GB is fine. Windows file share on 1GB is the penance part.

Did you test your restore?

With that much RAM pressure, I'd worry about shadow copies failing. 3-2-1 rule, even for lab boxes.

Checklist for 1GB Windows:

  • Disable all visual effects
  • Pagefile fixed at 2GB
  • Backup to external before any registry tweak
  • Test boot to safe mode monthly

I've seen 1GB nodes corrupt backups under memory pressure. Test your restore.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. But has anyone actually run AD on 1GB? I need it for class project and only have student budget. Double punctuation because nervous.
